Presenting the Buddhist Path  (Four Noble Truths, Mahayana & Tantra)

This course will present a complete overview of the Buddhist path to enlightenment.

Starting with the Four Noble Truths we will see how these teachings form the basis of all Buddhist traditions. In the Four Noble Truths teachings the Buddha is our doctor giving his diagnosis of our current condition, his prognosis that we can completely transcend this unsatisfactory state and find a healthy state completely free of suffering, and finally his cure of how we can achieve this personal liberation from suffering.

We will then discuss how the Mahayana teachings build and expand upon these Four Noble Truths through the view of
emptiness and the cultivation of bodhicitta - the aspiration for complete enlightenment for the benefit of others.

And finally how Tantra (Vajrayana) enables us to accelerate the path to enlightenment on the basis of having cultivated
renunciation, bodhicitta and emptiness.

We will be using 'The Foundation of All Good Qualities', a very concise text by Lama Tsongkhapa - the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, to clarify the stages of our practice on the path to enlightenment based upon the Four Noble Truths, Mahayana and Tantra.

"I am delighted that the Center for Contemplative Research is offering opportunities for rigorous mind-training and collaborative research by practiced contemplatives and scientists. Together they seek to explore the inner sources of mental conflict and distress, the roots of genuine well-being, and the origins, nature, and potentials of the mind."
