GELUG MAHAMUDRA
MANNIKU METSALATU, ESTONIA
OVERVIEW
As said by Panchen Losang Chökyi Gyeltsen (tutor of the Fifth Dalai Lama):
May all migrators quickly gain victory over the two obscurations by means of this path
as there is no other second gateway to the state of peace.

Mahamudra – the great seal – refers to systems of meditation on the nature of the mind. Mahamudra techniques have been transmitted through the Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug schools of Tibetan Buddhism. This retreat will be based on the text “A Root Text for the Precious Gelug/Kagyu Tradition of Mahamudra” by Panchen Losang Chökyi Gyeltsen.

The two main areas of focus in this retreat will be shamatha practice (cultivating a calm, clear and focussed mind) and vipashyana practice (gaining insight into the nature of reality). The shamatha practices of observing the mind and resting in awareness and the vipashyana practice of gaining insight into the ultimate nature of the mind.

This retreat will also cover the preliminary practices which act as a foundation for mahamudra practice along with a brief discussion of the tantra or vajrayana level of practice.

8.2 Advice
"I am delighted that the Center for Contemplative Research is offering opportunities for rigorous mind-training and collaborative research by practiced contemplatives and scientists. Together they seek to explore the inner sources of mental conflict and distress, the roots of genuine well-being, and the origins, nature, and potentials of the mind."
